Starting with the January 2024 earthquake
The Wajima Biomass Power Plant suffered significant damage in the January 2024 Hokuriku Earthquake. However, this crisis has become a turning point, leading to its rebirth as a symbol of regional revitalization. The newly conceived "Hybrid Plant" will operate as a comprehensive production hub, leveraging renewable energy while collaborating with local agriculture and fisheries.
This plant will integrate biomass power generation with hydroponic farming and land-based aquaculture, aiming to establish a sustainable food production system. By repurposing by-products as fertilizers and feed, it will contribute to a circular economy. Additionally, it will create jobs, encourage young people to return to their hometowns, and support the revitalization of the local community.
The success of the Hybrid Plant will serve as a model for other disaster-affected areas and regional cities across Japan. Promoting local production and consumption of energy and food, it will play a vital role in the nation’s regional revitalization efforts.
Your support and participation in this project will contribute to building a resilient future for Japan. Let us write the story of recovery together, starting from Wajima.

ABOUT ISHIKAWA
Ishikawa Prefecture is 68% forested, and it is no exaggeration to say that our lives, along with its beautiful scenery, are created by these rich forests.
Many of these trees were planted 50 to 60 years ago.
Since then, they have been carefully nurtured and grown thick and large, and are now reaching maturity, suitable for use. However, at present, only about 70% of the lumber generated from thinning, which is essential for forest maintenance, is used for logs, bulbs, etc. The rest of the scraps and crooked cedar are used for logs and bulbs. The rest of the wood is left in the mountains in the form of leftover wood in the forest. This is a waste. There is no way to avoid cascade use (multi-stage use).
On the other hand, the explosive increase in the global population and the massive consumption of fossil fuels are causing the greenhouse effect of the earth's atmosphere and the environment surrounding us to deteriorate visibly. In addition, since the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, there is a growing need to secure and supply safe, secure, and adequate energy sources.
Against this background, we have decided to establish “Wajima Biomass Power Plant Corporation” and “Biochip Corporation” and construct “Wajima Biomass Gasification Power Plant” in order to effectively utilize unused wood as woody biomass and convert it into electricity.
BIOMASS TECHNOLOGY
SUMMARY
The dual fluidized bed gasification technology is an advanced method for efficiently converting biomass into synthesis gas. This process uses two interconnected fluidized beds to continuously carry out thermal decomposition and gasification of biomass. Specifically, biomass is first pyrolyzed in the primary fluidized bed, and the resulting char is then gasified in the secondary bed to produce high-quality synthesis gas.
The advantages of this technology include:
-
High Gasification Efficiency:
The fluidized bed system improves the gasification efficiency of biomass, resulting in a higher yield of synthesis gas. -
Applicability to Various Biomass Types:
The system can process a wide range of biomass feedstocks, including woody biomass, thereby increasing fuel flexibility. -
Reduced Tar Formation:
By optimizing catalysts and operating conditions, tar production is minimized, reducing the burden on downstream gas cleaning processes.
With these characteristics, the dual fluidized bed gasification technology is regarded as a promising approach that combines efficiency and economic feasibility in the production of synthesis gas from biomass.
At the Wajima Biomass Plant, this technology has been applied and extensively tested through numerous experiments conducted in Japan. As a result, the designed hydrogen content in the synthesis gas was achieved while maintaining a methane concentration—a key indicator of tar content—that is more than 20% lower than leading European benchmarks. Additionally, a 20% reduction in wood chip consumption was accomplished.
